traditional finnish food

Here is few examples about traditional finnish food and drinks.

Glögi is traditional christmas drink in Finland. Actually it has come to Finland from Sweden. There are different kinds of Glögi: alcohol-free, low-alcohol and strong alcohol.



Karjalanpaisti is made of cubed meat. Other ingredients are water, onion, salt, pepper and bay leafs. In a workaday version there is also vegetable. There are lots of variants from the basic recipe. Usually karjalanpaisti is served with boiled or mashed potatos. Karjalanpaisti has come from the area of Karjala near the limit of Russia.


Cheesebread is a very traditional finnish food. It's usually served with cloudberry or cream.


Mämmi is sweet, very traditional finnish food, which is eaten especially on Easter. Actually it's a porridge, which is mostly made of water, malt and rye flour.


Viili is like yoghurt, but it's sourer and thicker. It's usually eaten with sugar, jam, cinnamon, ginger or berrys, because they balance its sour taste.
